The locomotive industry started it all. One of the first to blacknitride, locomotive engines have multiple parts that use cast iron as the primary metal in their construction. Cast iron is extremely porous and irregular in its shape when a cast is made. Blacknitriding helps fill voids in the cast material and protect the engine part from corrosion.
By engineering design, a coolant maintains a safe temperature in the locomotive’s combustion chamber. Unfortunately, coolant is corrosive. It cannot penetrate H&M Blacknitride+™. Blacknitride helps protect the steel, and therefore, improves the engine’s durability.
The parts that go through the H&M Blacknitride+™ process are:
• Cylinders
• Piston crowns
• Articulating rods
